SDC-9+

Bioaugmentation culture for groundwater remediation

SDC-9+ is a 50/50 blend of the SDC-9 and TCA-20B cultures. It is a highly effective consortium of microorganisms for in situ bioremediation of chlorinated solvents, supporting the complete dechlorination of both chloroethanes to ethane and chloroethenes to ethene.

SDC-9+ contains multiple strains of Dehalococcoides mccartyi (Dhc), the primary microorganisms known to completely dechlorinate PCE, TCE, and DCE to non-toxic ethene, as well as Dehalobacter spp. (DHBt) and several other halorespiring genera that consistently dechlorinate chloroethanes. Together, these microorganisms support the complete conversion of 1,1,1-TCA to ethane without the accumulation of 1,1-DCA or chloroethane daughter products.

For sites containing both chloroethanes and chloroethenes where native Dhc are absent or present at low concentrations, bioaugmentation with SDC-9+ provides the microorganisms needed for complete dechlorination of both contaminant groups to their non-toxic end products, ethene and ethane.

Why SDC-9+

SDC-9+ combines the proven performance of the SDC-9 and TCA-20B cultures to support complete anaerobic biodegradation of both chloroethenes and chloroethanes. Its diverse consortium of dechlorinating microorganisms is designed for sites where multiple chlorinated solvent families are present or where native microbial populations are insufficient for complete treatment.

Complete Dechlorination

Contains both Dehalococcoides mccartyi (Dhc) and Dehalobacter spp. (DHBt) to support complete dechlorination of both chloroethenes and chloroethanes to their non-toxic end products, ethene and ethane.

Higher Dechlorination Rates

TCA-20B has demonstrated degradation rates of 1,1-DCA as high as 20 mg/L/day and chloroethane (CA) up to 3 mg/L/day. Following chloroethane degradation, Dhc more rapidly completes the reduction of chloroethenes to ethene.

Prevents Dhc Inhibition

Trihalogenated chloroethanes and fluoroethanes can inhibit Dehalococcoides mccartyi (Dhc), slowing or preventing complete chloroethene degradation. SDC-9+ rapidly reduces these compounds, allowing Dhc to function more effectively.

Designed for Mixed Contaminant Sites

The combined SDC-9 and TCA-20B cultures provide a broad consortium of dechlorinating microorganisms specifically designed for sites containing both chloroethanes and chloroethenes, where native microbial populations are absent or insufficient.

Technical Details

How it Works

1. SDC-9+ delivers Dehalococcoides mccartyi (Dhc), Dehalobacter spp. (DHBt), several other halorespiring genera and other beneficial microorganisms to the treatment zone.

2. Supports reductive dechlorination
By combining the TCA-20B with SDC-9 the SDC-0+ culture rapidly and reliably reduces chloroethanes to ethane and chloroethenes to ethene.

  1. Improves treatment performance
TCA-20B has shown degradation rates of 1,1-DCA as high as 20 mg/L/day and has even shown to degrade CA as well at rates up to 3 mg/L/day.  Rapid reduction of trihalogenated ethanes improves the performance of Dehalococcoides mccartyi (Dhc), for more effective reduction of chloroethenes.

Application & Handling

  • Commonly injected with anaerobic chase water or co-injected with anaerobic water and electron donors
  • This approach minimizes oxygen exposure while helping distribute TCA-20B microbes throughout the treatment area.
  • We recommend preparing anaerobic water with the Newman Zone OS oxygen scavenger to both remove oxygen and free chlorine from tap water.

Contaminants Treated:

Tetrachloroethene (PCE), Trichloroethene (TCE), cis-Dichloroethene (cDCE), trans- Dichloroethene (tDCE), 1,1-Dichloroethene, Vinyl Chloride (VC),

Freon 11, Freon 113, 1,1,2,2-Tetrachloroethene (TeCA), 1,1,1-Trichloroethane, 1,1-Dichloroethane (1,1-DCA), Chloroethane (CA),

Carbon Tetrachloride (CT), Chloroform (CF), Dichloromethane (DCM), Tetrafluoroethane (TFE)

Culture Characteristics

  • pH 6.0 – 8.0
  • Density 0.9-1.1 g/cm3
  • Appearance: light greenish, murky liquid
  • Odor: musty

Packaging & Storage

  • 19 L stainless steel kegs
  • Pressurized with nitrogen
  • A basic dispensing system provided by APTIM (see manual).  An inert gas regulator and a small tank of argon or nitrogen need to be provided by the user.
  • RNAS Microdosing system allows for more precise measurement of small volumes of culture.  Includes an inert gas regulator, refrigerant scale, valve box and micro-dose measuring system. A small tank of nitrogen or argon needs to be provided by the user.

Storage:

  • Store at 2–4°C, culture activity rapidly deteriorates at higher temperatures
  • Shelf life up to 3 weeks or more when on ice or refrigerated
  • Avoid freezing
  • Avoid exposure to oxygen

Safety

Non-toxic, non-pathogenic, non-genetically modified microbial consortium. No known hazards under normal use conditions. PPE recommended during handling.
